Creating a Character Makeup for Dr Who, really!

Well this is a funny old business really. Never dreamt we would be asked to provide anything for 'Dr Who' and the next thing you are creating a wonderful old age for actor Arthur Darvill' in the new series.

Top that with it being written by Neil Gaiman and that ticks all the boxes for us.

Oh and the timeframe was incredibly tight but it was done and went down a storm.

We are in danger of becoming typecast!

A lovely client wanted some of our funky Neanderthal work and a quick prosthetic run and crewing later, we were in stunning Poland.

Working with the friendliest production company we had borne witness to for a while, our hard working crew (Thanks Pat, Mark and of course led by the keen eyed Mike Stringer)carefully created a whole bunch of half face silicone prosthetic witty Neanderthals in short time!

Hybrid Fx help 'The Walking Dead' take over London

Hybrid Fx were recently tasked with creating over 28 unique ‘Zombies’ to promote the upcoming FX Channel series ‘The Walking Dead’ which airs in the UK on the 5th November.

The PR stunt was truly a global undertaking, crossing 26 different cities and timezones, with each launching their own ‘undead attack’ in quick succession.

With a crew of seven Makeup & Prosthetic Artists and a starting call of 2.00am, the mass of rotting flesh was turned out in and orderly yet quite terrifying fashion in time for the 6.30am call.
London landmarks were then swamped by the ravenous zombie horde, scaring commuters as they shuffled about in the morning mist.

Hybrid Fx speak at 'Tate Movie Event' Thames Festival

We were recently invited to speak about our work on 'Undercover Dads' at the Tate Movie Project in London.

The two 15 minutes sessions flew past as full face prosthetics, lifecasting moulds and even fake teeth were passed around the crowd to inspect. A small snippet of 'Undercover Dad's was also shown with a robust Q&A Session afterwards, leaving a fair few dad's in the audience apparently game to give it ago in the future!

The key purpose of the event was to get children to create artwork that would then be turned into an animated film for the 2012 Olympics.

We are happy to announce that our Prosthetic & Makeup team for the hit BBC2 show 'Undercover Dads' have been shortlisted for the prestigious award.

It is always nice to be up for an award but this one is special as it focuses on the team involved in the show, from frontline makeup artists to the clever and talented people that design, sculpt and fabricate our lifelike silicone disguise work.

Big thanks to Dawn, Ricky and Suzanne for pulling long shifts and still managing to create awesome looking 'Mega Nannies'.

The award dinner is on June 14th.

Screening at the Tribeca Film Festival and with its world premiere on April 23rd in New York City is the indie film ‘Brilliantlove’.

Hybrid were commissioned to provide the key character prosthetics for the feature, which was shot on locations around Newcastle.

'Stoneage Atlantis' Broadcast Date

Airing at 7.00pm, Sunday 11th April on the National Geographic Channel is the 'Stoneage' based documentary for which Hybrid created all the extensive Neolithic Character Makeup's.

With a Makeup team of four, up to fifteen characters were created each day over the efficient 5 day shoot, from tribal elders to Hunter-Gatherers, Fishermen and their children.

A key feature of the shoot was the team's ability to quickly change and re-dress the wigs & adapt makeup designs for each actor to allow them to play multiple character roles over the long and varied historical time periods.

Aired Sunday 26th July on BBC2 at 9.00am was the new Children's series called 'Undercover Dads'

'Hybrid' were hired to design and create the tricky gender change Makeup's as well as supply both prosthetic and makeup artists for the thirteen week shoot.

Not only did we have to make the 'Undercover Dads' look feminine, they then had to fool their own children into believing they were indeed a 'Mega Nanny'!

Hybrid were hired to disguise a trio of well known celebrities including Louis Walsh, Jenny McAlpine and Matt Dawson.

A Tiger Aspect Production, it follows on from four successful years of the Irish 'Anonymous' show made for RTE.

Both Prosthetic and Makeup artists were supplied by us for the shoot and the Series Producer was Richard Cook.

Hybrid Win Royal Television Society Craft Award

Hybrid unanimously won this years 'Makeup Design: Entertainment and Non-Drama Productions' Category for their Prosthetic, Makeup and Hair work on the 'Wall to Wall' Production of 'Sex and the Neanderthals: Revealed'.

Accepting the award, Special Makeup Effects Supervisor Mike Bates said "This is our 2nd consecutive year for an RTS Nomination, and to win this year makes it all the more special, it's great for the hard work of everyone on our team to be recognised in this way."

Absent winners Prosthetic Designer Mike Stringer and Makeup Designer Kim Freeland were unfortunately unable to attend due to shooting commitments.

The presentation was at the Intercontinental Hotel, Park Lane, London on Monday 24th November, hosted by Fern Britton.

"The jury said that the make-up was convincing to such an extent that you forgot you were watching actors in heavy prosthetics and genuinely got involved in the travails of the characters, as you would with any drama documentary."

Mike Stringer, Mike Bates, Kim Freeland and the Hybrid team have just been nominated in this years 'Makeup Design: Entertainment and Non-Drama Productions' Category for their Prosthetic, Makeup and Hair work on the 'Wall to Wall' Production 'Sex and the Neanderthals: Revealed'.

Together we designed and created a range of Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon characters for the science based documentary aired on Channel 5 recently.
We supplied the complete Makeup Service and on-set team for the show from Prosthetics through to Character Makeup and Hair.

Premiering in London on Friday 3rd October is the retro' 50's Zombie love story 'Flick', starring Faye Dunaway, Hugh O'Conor, Mark Benton, Michelle Ryan and Liz Smith.

Hybrid were hired to design and create the Iconic look of the principal character 'Johnny 'Flick' Taylor' played by Hugh O'Connor as well as all the additional Makeup Effects for the film.

Hybrid's specialist in house team handled all the prosthetic makeup applications and Fx Supervision in Wales for the entire shoot over several weeks in 2007.

Hybrid go 'Anonymous' for the 4th Year !

As the Autumn schedule begins, Hybrid Enterprises are pleased to announce that they have been asked to work on the 4th season of the hit Irish TV Show 'Anonymous' for RTE.

Hybrid have been with the show since they created the 1st prosthetic makeover for the pilot back in 2004, which all started with Brian McFadden.

Since then a great range of celebrities have had their lives transformed for a day including Samantha Mumba, Ronan Keating, Patrick Kielty, Keith Duffy, Ken Doherty and Mairead Farrell pictured here.

There have been many different types of prosthetic disguise created and applied by the Hybrid team for the various celebrities on the show, from young to old as well as changes of race and gender. To date, 18 celebrities have had their lives changed for a day, and another 6 brand new faces will soon have the fun of being 'Anonymous'.

The Prosthetic team at Hybrid have been enjoying warmer weather for much of their "Summer" out in India on a range of movie projects, but the workshop has also kept busy in the UK with many Prop' based challenges both large and small for shows like Lost in Austen, Spooks-Code 9, Survivors, as well as regular shows like Heartbeat and Emmerdale.

From stunt weapons, to lightweight resin and HD Foam duplicates, Hybrid's mould storage department is now starting to strain nicely at the seams.

Hybrid reveal the sexy side of Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon Life

'Sex and the Neanderthals: Revealed', a 'Wall to Wall' production that recently aired on Channel Five, tasked Hybrid with designing and creating the many Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons needed for the shoot.

Working closely with Director Tim Lambert, Prosthetic Designer Mike Stringer and his team came up with a look and style that was based upon the new scientific theories the documentary was keen to explore.

The distinctive makeups were a mix of half face silicone prosthetics, individually sculpted teeth for the Neanderthals and multiple beard and hair work for both races.

To ensure the 'look and style' of the show was kept uniform, Hybrid provided a full Makeup and Prosthetic on set crew to cover the daily applications, which ranged from four principals and up to eight at times.

Hybrid were recently invited to give a talk about Special Makeup Effects to over 30 school children from Morely High School in Leeds for the newly launched FilmClub.org

After a quick 'Question and Answer' session and a practical demonstration, the kids were let loose to apply their own silicone prosthetic wounds and blood work.

The event was incredibly well received by all that participated, with many refusing to remove the wounds until they got home!

Our team worked on the new of the hit Channel Four show 'Shameless' which has just ended its TV run.

After ten years in our old workshop, we have finally moved to our spanking brand new dedicated facility.

Our own parking, spiffing front entrance with office space and lushing oddles of Makeup Roomage, Sculpting and Fabricating zones and finally, Male and Female toilets in the same building.

Seriously, what more could you ask for? Well ok, meeting rooms and a kitchen too, good job thats there as well.

(Oh yes, extraction bits and bobs but hey,we had that from day one. Does your workshop have it? if not, speak to your friendly Health and Safety Executive. No point slaving away and sucking up fumes, that's just wrong and quite frankly illegal).

Grumpy Santa Returns!

Well, back for the second year it seems.

We have been called upon to re-create the miserable Santa Clause starring Alan Ford for 'More4'.

The upside this year is the addition of two more characters, a Reindeer and a elf.

As the pictures and videos show, the spirit of ill will was captured perfectly.

Well, we were through to the final round of the Royal Television Society Craft Awards for our work on 'Hyperdrive' Series Two.

That being Davey Jones, Mike Stringer and Mike Bates but really meaning everyone in the workkshop who worked so hard on the shoot. So a big thank you to them.

We didn't win on the night, but we had a good time.

Maybe Prosthetics are due a sep category though, seems a shame that there is so much decent work being done and the sector gets setup against the straight makeup & hair category every year.

Would be good to recognise workshop staff too, rather than the owners or designers who invariably show up.

In better news, Mike Stringer was accepted into BAFTA and get's his end of year supply of screeners.

All he has to do now is remember to watch them!

Three Old People walk into a bar...

A mad dash job up to Glasgow saw us tranforming two gents and a lass into seventy year old pensioners. It was for a good cause though, the local fundraising charity VSA, which raises money for the elderly.

A hectic makeup process led to a very long day indeed, the prosthetics were finally removed after a good sixteen hours. Good job our Silicone is bullet proof indeed!

It's Raining Dogs and Lice

Well, no chance of a slow down here. Busy planning (oops can't reveal that yet) and also (oops not this either) whilst Mike Stringer, Prosthetic Designer and all round Taskmaster has been busy whipping the workshop into a frenzy, making Bayonets, Rubber Lugers and creating a full scale 'Louse' Costume for a TV commerical.

Oh, and he also created a rather interesting silicone paint mix that was thrown against a rather nice old Jaguar for 'Heartbeat' to simulate paint vandalism. I think he had a few sweaty moments about it but the 'paint' peeled right off with no damage!

As it's our 10th year of being in this strange business, expect some interesting posts soon, once the dust settles down (literally), we will reveal all.

Viewing wise I recommend trying to catch the next series of 'Anonymous' (as below), I have seen the preview tapes and the setups, celebrities and reveals are top grade. Really excellent work by Mike and Mark, who ran the on set crew in Ireland.

We also received in the post the short idents used at Christmas for 'More 4's Santa' skits. Hopefully we will be able to get them up on the website for download, they are seriously funny. They can be found on 'You Tube' if you look around.

The 'Fey Cross' novel is progressing rapidly and a website hopefully will be up at some stage.

A Frantic Feb , Time does Fly By

Well, we have been busy. December to Now saw us run two full makeup crews for the UK Films 'Outpost' (Black Camel Films) and 'Flick' (Monster Films) to apply all the prosthetics we created for the shows.

Both shoots went well and the work was incredibly well received, a tribute to our Workshop Staff and the professionalism of the on set crews.

Whilst we covered the films, the workshop plowed ahead with more bits and bobs for 'The Chase', 'Emmerdale' and 'Heartbeat'.

All in all, a splendid few months and we look forward to updating the website and revealing some exciting news for Hybrid in the near future......

'Dhoom 2' Released and Santa pays a Visit

December had kicked off with a bang for us. Our fourth Bollywood movie 'Dhoom 2' has been released and going great guns.

We created the prosthetic makeups for the film and a lot of the straight makeup designs as well.

For the shoot, both Makeup & Prosthetic Designers were put in place by Hybrid, which allowed the initial photoshop design work to complement both makeup fields.

Dhoom 2

Brit film wise, we are now in pre-production for the horror movie 'Outpost', which starts shooting early Jan 2007. Pre - production also starts on another brit film in December, more on that soon.

Look out for a naughty Santa on 'More4' over the Christmas period, we created the overall santa look and the shoot was hard to finish due to the very funny idents they shot.

Work has finished on the Second Series of 'Anonymous', where we disguised another six Irish celebrities in full face silicone prosthetics. A link to the new series will be posted once it is live

Obviously we cannot show any of the work due to the standard NDA's, but rest assured we aim to keep pushing the boundaries of Silicone Makeup work in the show. If you thought the 'Glish' from last year was a heavy appliance, wait and see.......

The firm is also busy on several other productions but at this stage we cannot reveal too much! Suffice to say there are several decent Character designs involved...

Well another small update of work in progress, the seasonal and repeat work we love to see here.

Now up to the Fourth year of 'The Royal' for us , getting darker every season and good to see the work not being cut out!

Season Two of 'The Chase' brings more animal surgery and more odd bits for 'Heartbeat', 'Emmerdale' and 'Diamond Geezer'.

Jamie Oliver Return to School Dinners

Hybrid recently supplied & created seven full face prosthetics for the Channel 4 Ident 'Return to School Dinners.

With limited lead time, 3 Character designs were sculpted and then used as generic appliances for the remaining children.

On set the makeups were turned around in two shifts and worked a treat. Given that Hybrid had to turn down the Jamie Makeup due to lifecasting time constraints, the end effects were very pleasing and it was a pleasure to work with the Shermans and co on this shoot.

The final quarter of 2006 is very busy for us with both Film & TV work competing for our time.
